Birks, 42, to the position of executive vice president and chief financial officer, reporting to Frederick D. Lawrence, chairman and chief executive officer. Birks succeeds George L. Spillane, 63, as chief financial officer. Spillane remains vice president and corporate secretary, positions he has held since joining the company in 1980. International Telecommunications Expertise Birks’ career spans 15 years in the telecommunications industry, working in the wireless products, systems and services segments. She has held senior executive financial and general management positions at ComStream, Macrovision and GTE Spacenet. At ComStream and Macrovision, she served as chief financial officer and continues to serve on the board of directors of Macrovision, a publicly traded company. At GTE Spacenet, where she spent nine years, her last position was vice president of international operations with international VSAT sales and full P&L responsibility. Her responsibilities with these pioneer satellite and video technology companies included financial management, strategic planning, human resources, contracts, licensing, international business development, sales and marketing management, acquisitions, divestitures and business analysis. Birks holds an MS in Finance from American University, Washington, D.C. and a BS in Business Administration from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia and is a Certified Public Accountant.
