REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA - CALIFORNIA MICROWAVE, INC. (Nasdaq National Market: CMIC) announced that its Microwave Data Systems division (MDS) was selected to provide radio system equipment for two major projects in the Philippines and in Egypt. These contracts demonstrate the expanding acceptance in the international market of MDS' 400 & 900 MHz point-multipoint and point-to-point data communications radios for System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Control of a Precious Resource Aided by MDS Radio System To rectify the problem, the Angat Water Supply Optimization Project will be installed in 1996 to place flow monitoring equipment at over 250 points throughout the citywide network. This SCADA system will rely on five MDS 4100 master stations, five MDS 4100 repeater stations and 250 associated remote MDS 4310 radio transceivers. Through this system, data will be exchanged between remote monitoring points and the central command and control site at the Republic of the Philippine's Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System in downtown Manila. After computer data analysis, distribution points with significant water loss can be easily identified. This system is the one of the largest water system monitoring and control known to date in the Asia-Pacific Rim area and will be complemented by a second expansion project expected to be completed in 1997. Gotesco (Philippines) and the Republic of the Philippines are united in this venture and have secured funding from the Asian Development Bank. MDS Radio System Will Reduce Installation Costs and Improve Reliability Beginning in the winter of 1996/97, this 400 MHz radio based SCADA system will be installed for the remote monitoring and control of sub-station and switching points in the electrical distribution grid of a large metropolitan area. This arrangement will eliminate the need for a costly and often unreliable wire based (telephone) communication links. MDS radios will provide fast and direct communications for this critical service. The Egyptian system was designed by Valmet Automation (a division of SAGE Systems), an American company specializing in the design and fabrication of turnkey SCADA systems, and includes a customized version of Valmet's PoleCAT RTU. Microwave Data Systems is a leading supplier of point-to-point and point-multipoint radios for data telemetry applications and low density point-to-point radios for data/voice and video applications. It has shipped some 100,000 data radios. California Microwave Inc. is a leader in wireless communications. It is the number one U.S. supplier of microwave radios and telecommunications satellite earth stations. The company operates facilities in seven states and sells into more than 110 countries. Its strategy calls for significant expansion in the wireless area. The company's wireless and satellite communications operation are fully certified to the ISO 9001 quality standard.
