Redwood City, California - California Microwave, Inc. (CMIC-Nasdaq) announced
that its Satellite Transmission Systems (STS) division had won a contract
valued at approximately $500,000 from Mitsubishi Corporation to provide and
commission an earth station outside of Tokyo, Japan. The earth station will
be used for data distribution services, including DirecPC service, a
high-speed, satellite-based Internet access service. Mitsubishi is one of
the founders and now the purchasing agent of Space Communications Corporation
(SCC). The earth station consists of a 4.6-meter Ku-band antenna and a redundant uplink subsystem, initially equipped with a redundant downlink subsystem. The uplink subsystem comprises Ku-band compact medium power amplifiers and Ku-band upconverters. STSí proprietary graphical monitor and control system will provide centralized monitor and control of the earth station from a single work station. The project is scheduled to be completed in July 1997. Space Communications Corporation, Japanís first satellite business in the private sector, owns and operates two communication satellites, SUPERBIRD-A and SUPERBIRD-B. SCC is planning to launch a third satellite, SUPERBIRD-C in 1997, and will use the new earth station as a hub for DirecPC service via SUPERBIRD-A.
