CALIFORNIA MICROWAVE'S MRC INTRODUCES
18 GHz DIGITAL VIDEO MICROWAVE SYSTEM

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA-CALIFORNIA MICROWAVE, INC. (Nasdaq National Market: CMIC) announced today that its Microwave Radio Communications (MRC) division introduced the new DMR-18 Digital Microwave Radio System. The DMR-18 provides a cost-effective, highly reliable medium-to-short-haul digital link in the 17.7 to 19.7 GHz frequency band for digital video networks, studio-to-transmitter links (STLs), transmitter-to-studio (TSLs) links, and satellite backhaul requirements. MRC is featuring the DMR-18 at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, April 6-9, 1998.

FCC Mandates Analog-to-Digital Television Transition
The first model in MRC's new DMR Series, the DMR-18 is designed especially to accommodate the requirements of television stations making the FCC-mandated transition to digital television. For immediate digital studio-to-transmitter links or return links to the studio, the DMR-18 can be configured with a digital modem operating at either 34 Mbps or 45 Mbps. For stations still requiring analog microwave systems, the DMR-18 can be ordered today with analog modems, and then upgraded later to digital operation.

In many cities, additional 7 or 13 GHz spectrum is not available for new digital television STLs. With the DMR-18 Series, stations operating both analog and digital channels can gain new STL capabilities in the less congested 18 GHz band. These new STLs can be configured to support several different strategies: as a dedicated DTV STL, as a dedicated analog STL, or as a 2-channel STL carrying any combination of two or more DTV and analog STL channels.

The DMR-18 is available in simplex (one-way) or duplex radio configurations. Both analog and digital modems are internal to the 3RU indoor unit.

The outdoor unit features the latest in solid-state MMIC based VCOs, compact single coax connection to the indoor unit, and a direct connection to MRC 60-cm, 90-cm and 120-cm antennas. The integral keypad and display on the indoor unit provides comprehensive diagnostic and configuration capability via an on-board microcontroller: RSL in dBm, RF band, current alarms, and alarm history.
